September 9, 2009

On Wednesday, I met with the 6th grade orchestra which rehearses on A and C days during 13th mod as well as the 7th grade orchestra which rehearses during 11th mod on those A and C days. Today, I met the rest of the 6th grade as well as the 8th graders.

We completed index cards for my reference that included student names, phone numbers, email addresses, houses, grade levels, and instruments. Teams were also formed and self-named. Teams are heterogeneous, with some violins, a viola, and a cello/bass and will be used primarily for seat check procedure, dismissal, and classroom organization.

The course outline was given to each student for reference and review. Key points include:

Schedule:
7th grade 11th mod (1:20pm-2:00pm) AC
6th grade 13th mod (2:40-3:20pm) AC/BD
8th Grade 3rd mod (10:10-10:50pm)BD

Lessons:
Lessons will begin the week of Monday, September 14th.

Students are expected to pick up their lesson card from the orchestra room the day of their lesson so as to obtain permission from the classroom teacher. Students may only miss a lesson in the event of a test or if they are failing that particular subject, and missed lessons must be made up within two weeks.

Grading
is as follows: Attendance and participation make up 50% of the orchestra grade. An absence in orchestra negatively affects the entire ensemble, so regular attendance is a must. Students will receive 25% of their grade from lessons, and the remaining 25% comes from preparation checks. These checks can be anything from submitted homework to seat checks to auditions. Successful students take 30-45 minutes each day to prepare for orchestra.

Each ensemble performs in at least 2 concerts each school year.
6th Grade December 15th & April 20th
7th Grade December 10th & April 15th
8th Grade December 2nd & April 28th

Every ensemble has homework that is due the next time we meet:

1. Bring instruments. We’re going to sight read new music!
2. Get the yellow letter (stating that they will remain in orchestra and attend the concerts as set on the calendar) signed.
3. Fill out the information form (2 sides!).
